ND Eagle was released from the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 2016. The North Dakota Crop Improvement and Seed Association (NDCISA) has a license agreement with the NDSU Research Foundation to produce and distribute ND Eagle seed.

ND Eagle is an Eston-type small green lentil. ND Eagle has high yield potential in North Dakota environments based on 2011-2017 NDSU lentil trial results. In trials from 2011-2017 ND Eagle produced an average seed yield of 1746 lb/acre across all trials compared to 1735 lb/acre for CDC Viceroy. ND Eagle has excellent agronomic performance.

It has a semi-erect plant habit with average plant height 35 cm compared to 36 cm for CDC Viceroy. ND Eagle flowers and matures one to two days earlier than check varieties. ND Eagle has high seed quality with no observations of speckled variants.

Seed size for ND Eagle is within the acceptable range of the small green lentil market class. It is slightly larger than CDC Viceroy.

To help ensure genetic purity, ND Eagle lentil has been protected under Plant Variety Protection Act Title V and must be sold as a class of certified seed.
