SpeedEIS – A Strategy for High-Throughput Corrosion Screening
RFT-138
This invention pertains to rapid screening (evaluation) of the corrosion protective properties of coatings. It involves an automated electrochemical apparatus (e.g., multi-sample, with 12 spots or wells, metal plate/substrate used in conjunction with a multi-sample electrode designed for constant immersion) and a data analysis method.
Conventional electrochemical testing apparatus and associated methods for corrosion protective coatings are time-intensive and require large sample sizes. As a result, most methods (conventional EIS, ENM, etc.) are not well suited for rapid screenings, evaluations, or other processes such as those performed by high throughput (combinatorial) systems on paint systems or corrosion inhibitors. In contrast, SpeedEIS can be closely integrated into existing high throughput (combinatorial) systems and will provide data with greater precision in a timelier manner using a smaller number of samples.
This technology is of potential value to those parties that test/evaluate polymers and coatings on metal substrates in industry and academia (e.g., paints for automotive, aircraft, ships, and buildings). It is also of potential value to those parties involved in commercializing hi-throughput, array testing of coatings.
